Great thanks.

I was thinking that the edit facility would allow you to make changes to your own articles which would then be resubmitted for approval in the same way as the new articles, so you guys can still keep control. Might be easier than emailing you guys and trying to explain what the mistake!

I saw an error in an article I had written when it appeared in the newspaper so thought I’d correct it with the “suggest another text for this article” button in the actual newspaper. What this actually seems to do is allow you to do is submit a brand new article which will be very similar to the original. I now have two almost identical articles that have been approved, one of them with mistakes.

Might be good to have the facility to edit and also delete your own approved articles. Perhaps the “suggest another text….” button in the newspaper article should be to propose amendments to the original editor as mistakes are found rather than create a new one?

If you have time, perhaps you could delete the earlier version of my article titled “%{match.loser_team.name} self-destruct” – the one that lists the same team playing itself!

By the way, excellent work on the newspaper so far, I think it’s a great start!

I’m also not keen on articles which just state the match result given that we now have the same at the bottom of each article. It’s distracting that these are links that show up in green, it would look better if all the article text was black.

Haha, that was one of mine. It was a play on words, “streak” as in “to run naked in public”, hence the reference to a streaker in the article. I think you’re right though, we all have to consider that English is not the first language of everyone here and therefore won’t necessarily understand the humour.

Just to pick up on something Nirabdha said, I understand that you have a selection criteria for which articles take priority, but should we not be picking at least enough matches to fill all the articles rather than leave gaps?

Any thoughts on being able to view the last 2 or 3 newspapers in case you miss the one after the main league tick?

Are there plans to be able to view newspapers for other leagues/countries eventually?

cheers.

Are there any types of results that are lacking in articles? I imagine that a lot of people will have gone for certain types such as big win or big loss results! If so, let us know which ones you need more of.

On another note, it looks like the newspaper is generated every tick? I can’t always login after the main league game meaning that I miss the newspaper for the main results. How about publishing the last 3 newspapers so you I can go back and read it rather than reading about unimportant friendlies!

Yes, it’s back again – I assume we’re not supposed to be able to edit the approved articles.

I have one article to review with the admin’s comments “Please review this article text. After that, we might accept it.” but no indication of what is to be reviewed. I’m not sure if there are errors in it that need to be corrected, if it’s too long/short, or if they just don’t like the content of the article in general and I should scrap it! Could we get some more guidance with the article feedback?

I can’t seem to edit the newspaper articles I’ve submitted. One has been approved, two are pending (with one of them awaiting my review) but I can’t edit any of the three, there doesn’t appear to be any kind of link to click? It says that the editor has left comments on the one to be reviewed but I can’t read those either.

I’m sure there was an edit button there yesterday against each article but it appears to have gone.

cheers,
Neil.

Quick work as ever Danilo!

The new expected tie result says “scores exactly as expected”. I assume you mean the difference in scores rather than a precise score? i.e. if the expected result was 1-1 this result condition would be met for any other draw such as 0-0 or 2-2, not just 1-1?

cheers.

Haha, I wouldn’t intend to use them all in one article! You just might slip something in such as “X team scored 2 goals in the second half to secure the win”, or making something up about one of the players just to add a bit of a personalised touch.

Sorry, didn’t realise there was a discussion in the other thread following the announcement, I was just going by the variable listed on the newspaper editor in the actual game.

The more variables we have available the better, so that the articles are different everytime they crop up.

Hi,

Great work with putting together the newspaper article screen, this should make it really easy for everyone to put together some fun articles.

On the draw scenario there appears to be an option missing for an expected draw. The current options only allow for a draw when one of the teams were expected to win. It would also be nice to differentiate between a score draw (e.g. 1-1, 2-2) and a no-score draw (ie. 0-0).

You could also pick out key events, so you could write an article about a player being red carded or injured maybe.

It might also be useful to be able to pick a certain type of match, so that people could write a report specifically for a Champion’s League game, rather than having to make it general enough to apply to all types of match.

Some suggestions for new variables to improve the customisation:

- Winning/losing manager’s names.

- Winning/losing team’s country.

- Player names. For example By selecting winning team player number 1, you would be able to use the goalkeeper’s name.

- Winning/losing team’s number of goals scored in the first half, 2nd half and in total.

- Winning goalscorer’s name.

- Winning/losing team’s shirt colours (could be used to describe players or fans)

- Random number of minutes, to allow some variety on “X event happened on 72 minutes”

I can’t wait to see the newspaper come together!

cheers,

Neil.

Sorry, took a while before anyone offered any friendlies! I can also confirm the problem is fixed for IE7.

Yes javascript is enabled and I’ve reproduced the problem using IE on a second computer.

If you accept the friendly without choosing a formation then the changes are accepted as normal.

If you change the formation it does nothing when you click the green tick (no bouncy ball) and refreshing the page shows that it is still listed as an unaccepted friendly. Once you have tried to select a formation selecting blank again (no formation) also does not work. After trying this, refreshing the page and accepting without choosing a formation works fine.

The problem only seems to occur once you try and use the drop down list to choose a formation. A workaround for IE users is just to accept the friendly without choosing the formation, then change it on the fixtures screen as before.

Hi,

I normally use the Chrome browser to access RubySoccer, but just now I used IE7 and was unable to accept the friendlies. I didn’t try refusing, or accepting without choosing the formation. Could be a coincidence that this is the first time I had a problem with it, but thought I’d flag up that it could be a browser issue with IE.

By the way, thumbs up to the changes on this page, must easier to use when it works!

cheers

I just thought of a good use for the scouts. You could assume that they were also youth team scouts automatically searching for the best teenagers to feed into the youth academy. The level of the scouting department could influence the starting quality/maximum potential of new youths in the youth team. For people like myself who focus on developing youths rather than buying players, this would make the scouts worth having in addition to a good coaching level.

As I understand it, players have a limited number of evolutions and currently improve by playing matches. In order for a match to count the player has to play at least 30 minutes, but it makes no difference whether they play 30 or 90 minutes in one game. This seems to be leading to friendlies where teams will replace the whole team in order to improve more players at the same time. Ideally, if a player played longer then they should get more experience.

My suggestion is that players should improve based on number of match minutes they play. The increments could be either at a fixed number of minutes for all players or randomly generated for each player, so for instance a new youth player might increase after 30 minutes, then 100 minutes then 250 minutes, then 600 minutes etc. until reaching their maximum potential. This way if they get more match time then they will improve quicker. If you make lots of substitutions then more players will improve but at a slower rate.

Also, I think you said that eventually players would improve through being coached even without playing any matches. When this is implemented you could say that each tick a player would increase by the equivalent of 5 or 10 minutes of match time experience.

cheers!

Great idea. I suggested before that the coach could email to indicate when a player had reached his potential and wouldn’t improve anymore, but I like this idea much better.

You could ask the coach for a report on one of your players who would then give details on his expected potential and current rate of progress etc. The coaching level could influence the speed that the report comes back and maybe even the level of detail or accuracy.

I think this should be the job of the coach, but then again I think we also need to find more for the scout to do as I currently have no interest in having a scouting department at all!

I also agree with Alban, keep up the good work!

OK, perhaps needs to be clearer in the wiki for dummies like me!

I guess as in this instance he only improved one attribute by +1 that he must have reached his maximum. Do we have any other way of knowing whether he has reached his potential other than keep training? Maybe an email from the coaching staff?

If several players improve on the same turn, is the logic calculated separately for each player or do they all improve by the same amount?

I notice that players have to play for at least 30 minutes for the match to count towards improvement, will a player improve faster for playing 90 minutes instead of 30 or is it the same? If it is the same then I might as well make good use of the substitutions!

cheers,

I can’t say for sure about the past, but definitely on the last occasion keeping was the only skill to improve and it only improved by +1. I’m fairly sure it was the same the time before.

Are you saying that the amount of improvement defined in the wiki is a TOTAL increase rather than per attribute? I interpreted it as each attribute had a separate chance of increasing by different amounts during each step up. Do you mean that a +6 increase for example could be 6 separate attributes each increasing by +1?

I have coaching level 10 and according to the wiki there is a 0% chance of a player improving by +1. If I understand this correctly then when a player improves he must improve by at least +2 and possibly as much as +6.

My keeper had keeping of 90 and improved by a single point to 91. I had assumed that maybe he had reached his maximum, but a few turns later he has improved again by a single point to 92 so this can’t have been the case.

Could you check the logic for coaching please? It looks like it’s not working as described in the wiki.

cheers,

Neil.

Personally I think the coaching is a waste of time. If you’re going to have to pay serious money for scouting then most people won’t bother as they can just search for players themselves.
As for coaching and physio, I would be in favour of keeping it fairly high so that most teams wouldn’t keep them both at 100%, they would have to choose where to spend their money most effectively. Maybe start at 200,000 each and see how it works out?
How about varying the maximum amount needed based on the size of the squad? This would encourage managers to sell players to keep a smaller squad which wouldn’t be so expensive to maintain, and might spice up the transfer market a little?

Another bug:
In my last match I had my only striker sent off in the first half. Despite having a rule against that formation that says in the event of a red card to an attacker take off a defender and bring on the best attacker, no substitution was made at all so I played the rest of the game with no attackers. The attacker had previously had a yellow card in the game so perhaps it was a second yellow card and that is not being handled the same as a straight red? If so then 2 yellows should be handled the same. If not then the rule isn’t working at all.

I sometimes get system emails in the wrong language. On several occasions I have had friendly requests or accepted friendly notifications come through in what looks to be Spanish or Portuguese, even though my language setting is English. Looks like a bug, perhaps related to the other team’s language setting rather than mine?

Also a couple of times I have had your administrator emails come through from user “administradores”.

cheers.

What order of logic is used to sort the league tables if two teams are almost level?

I think usually it goes: number of points > goal difference > goals scored > results between the two teams.

I am in Italy Div 1 (fast ticker) and the top two teams have the same points. 2nd placed team has a better goal difference but not scored as many goals and has 1 less win. I would normally have expected 2nd place to have been 1st based on goal difference but there is clearly some other sorting order being used.

I just won the national cup and got a congratulations message from the board dated in the future!

Match played: turn 52
Current Turn: turn 55
Date of message: turn 58

As you’d expect, the message stays at the top of the inbox as new messages come in.

Still, it’s nice to know they will congratulate me sometime tomorrow morning! I’ll get started on my speech.

I also agree with Ricardo. For me, the biggest problem is knowing where we are in the weekly cycle so you can make sure you are not fielding suspended/injured players for the next game.

Rather than use real world dates, perhaps split the turns up into weeks? ie. 48 weeks of 3 turns, so you could have for example “Week 3 Turn 1/2/3” (pretty much what Ricardo suggested) or use days of the week like in SS, “Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday, Week 3”.

What is a W.O. report?

I can’t follow the link to see Ricardo’s error, but I had something very similar this turn. I won 1-0:

0-0-0 formation 0-0-0
% possession %
0 shots 0
0 shots on target 0
0% accurrate passes 0%
0% effective tackles 0%
0 corners 0
0 offsides 0
0 fouls 0

Visitor squad was incomplete

Are you saying that the match didn’t actually take place which is why there are no stats? In that case does the game default to a 1-0 victory?

I’ve been negotiating with one of my youth’s for several turns and just received a message saying he had rejected it again. I went into the negotiations screen, where the player was flashing indicating he was awaiting a new offer. I submitted a revised offer – which was higher than my previous offer but lower than the player’s suggested wages, but got an error message:

“you already have a proposal for this player”

and it didn’t submit my new offer. I tried it several times with the same result. I have since waited for the game to tick and the same is still happening.
